BOB CHERRY and Stephen Merrien were the shock winners of the round in the Travers Pairs.
Playing on their home Beau Sejour green, the Guernsey Bowling Club duo beat the very experienced pair of Gary Pitschou and Len Le Ber.
Cherry and Merrien’s consistent drawing to the jack was a feature in their terrific 26-22 victory.
Steve Machon and Phil Schofield beat Northerners Derek Barlow and Trevor Savident.
From being 1-5 down at four ends, the GBC pair settled down to dominate the rest of the match and return a 23-11 card.
North pair Charlie Browning and John Martel successfully reversed their order of play and were always ahead to beat Vale’s Stan Simon and Mick Yabsley 22-10.
The experienced GBC pair of Paul Sargeant and Geoff Savident were always in control of their game against Mick Hullock and Alan Gibson, which finished 20-11.
Played on the Delancey Park green, Craig Dorey and Will Ceillam may be the dark horses in this year’s competition.
They beat fellow Northerners Steve Cowdrey and Paul Wakeham, although the latter pair were well ahead 21-13 after 16 ends.
Dorey and Ceillam picked up counts of six and five on the next two ends to set up a great fightback and they eventually won 26-22.
Matthew Le Ber and Daniel De La Mare are now the only Vale Rec bowlers left in the competition after they beat clubmates Garry and Nigel Collins.
The latter pair were ahead 13-6 at 11 ends, but by the 15th the match was level at 16-16 and 10 shots gained on the following two ends put the former British Isles champions on their way to a 26-18 win.
Northerners Mac Timms and Ted Bartie beat the inexperienced but up-and-coming Vale Rec pair Andy Lucas and Peter Whales 23-13 while Dan Le Cheminant and Mick Cleal comfortably defeated fellow
Northerners Mick and Alan Merrien 22-13.
