NEXT year’s Careers Show is already looking for interested employers to put their names down to take part.
In January the event moved away from the traditional careers convention format it had been using for 36 years – which aimed to show students what opportunities were available to them after they left school – to a careers show aimed more at the general public.
‘We had very positive feedback from everyone who attended the Careers Show this year,’ said organiser Geoff Martel.
‘There is no doubt that using the Sir John Loveridge Hall, making the work zones very interactive, the events on stage and having good media coverage including the brochure worked.
‘We had many visitors over from Jersey who remarked on the quality of the event and next year the Isle of Man Government is keen to attend so that they can replicate the show.
The event has also secured a new sponsor in the form of The Sigma Group.
Mr Martel said its support was vital for the event, which along with the support of the Commerce and Employment and the Education departments, would enable the show to build on January’s success, with a few tweaks.
‘We cater for all sizes of companies and besides the opportunity to market organisations with the potential workforce there is also the opportunity to recruit.
‘In the concourse there will be a screen advertising all the job opportunities current and future, as well as bursaries and internships.
‘This way the public will be able to approach the companies with the knowledge that they will be recruiting rather than approaching as many stands as possible to find out if they have vacancies.’
Mr Martel said the States had already booked a zone to show off its range of opportunities, but it was important for smaller employers that might be in a niche market to have a presence, too.
A letter to organisations informing them about the 2010 Careers Show and asking them if they wanted to attend was sent out recently, but Mr Martel said he also was keen not to miss out any other employers who might not be aware of the event or how it could benefit them.
‘Any companies or organisations interested in finding out more can contact me at the Careers Service.’
nÊThe 2010 show takes place on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 January.
