ROVERS’ under-12 side won Saturday’s inaugural Jason Piriou Memorial Trophy after overcoming Vale Rec in a play-off.

It was needed when the two sides finished with five wins and a draw each in the round robin stage at Foote’s Lane.

The Port Soif club duly took the honours when they won the all-or-nothing match 4-1.

‘The boys were really, really pleased and they got what they deserved in the end,’ said Rovers coach Jez Robin.

The tournament was for the island’s Deloitte Corbet Cup teams and was held in memory of popular Sylvans U12s coach Jason Piriou, who died in November, aged 37.

Robin said he would have been proud of the event.

‘It was very well organised and it was nice of the Piriou family to donate the trophy,’ he said.

‘Jason would have liked the spirit in which the games were played in.’

This season’s Corbet Cup gets under way this weekend as North take on Rangers tomorrow at 6.30pm at Northfield.

Saturday sees Bels play St Martin’s at Victoria Avenue with a 10.30am kick-off and Rovers host Sylvans on Sunday at 10.30am.

Robin reckons this year’s league will be between his team, holders Vale Rec, North and Sylvans.

The top four teams at the end of the season go into play-offs to decide the champions.

‘We’d be very disappointed not to make that,’ said Robin.Jason Piriou Memorial Trophy: Play-off needed to decide inaugural winner
