EXTRA mature cheddar produced by the Guernsey Dairy has won a silver medal at this year’s World Cheese Awards.

This follows the award of bronze medal for its mild cheese at the 2009 British Cheese Awards.

The world competition was staged in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, and attracted cheeses from 34 countries.

More than 150 judges from 24 countries, including Mexico, South Africa, Japan and Australia, sampled the 2,440 entries before choosing the winners.

The range of premium Guernsey cheeses also has a new outer wrap that connects to the existing range of rebranded products introduced earlier in the year.

Dairy general manager Andrew Tabel said: ‘This award comes just as our re-branded cheeses hit the shelves of local supermarkets.

‘This contemporary design will complement our other products which include butter, cream, ice cream and, of course, milk.

‘The award proves that our cheese-making ability is held in high enough regard to be judged against the best cheeses from around the world and is testament to the knowledge and experience of our cheese-makers and the production techniques employed – not to mention the quality of the raw material,’ he said.

The new packaging design, created by advertising agency The Partnership, had to meet certain criteria and proved to be a challenge from the outset.

The Partnership creative director Joseph Smith said the repeated offset wallpaper design removes the worry about windows or label alignment which could affect the aesthetics of the packaging.

‘It is a more contemporary design that reflects the premium quality of the contents.’
