News from the Guernsey Press

Natalie reigns on as Miss Guernsey 2009 is cancelled

Controversy over who owned the rights to the event, the Carlton Plaza or Elvio Pires, its former manager, has led to its demise – but for one year only.

Carlton Plaza chairman and pageant organiser John Carpenter assured islanders that next year’s event would go ahead and Miss Guernsey 2010 might even take part in the Miss World competition.

While the ownership of the event has now been resolved, Mr Carpenter said it was too late in the year.

Instead, he is focusing on 2010.

‘I think there is a very good chance we will be able to take part in Miss World,’ he said.

‘It would make Miss Guernsey into an important position in the island and will raise the island’s profile. I would like our winner to represent the charm and beauty of Guernsey.’

He is planning to run the 2010 event next spring and hold a gala evening as opposed to the theatre-seating style event that has been held in the past.

‘Everybody I speak to loves the idea of the Miss Guernsey competition,’ said Mr Carpenter.

‘I now want to make it my team’s responsibility for ensuring next years event is one to remember.’

He said Natalie Thoumine (pictured), who became Miss Guernsey last September, would keep her crown until the next competition.

‘She has been a super Miss Guernsey,’ said Mr Carpenter. ‘She deserves to keep it for the extra time.’
