MANY bonfire parties went ahead last night despite earlier concerns about the weather.
Fireworks lit up a clear sky as many event organisers chose to heed advice from Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service head of fire safety Trevor Queripel.
Earlier in the day he had said that yesterday would probably be the best night for parties weather-wise, with more wind and rain predicted for today and tomorrow.
More than 300 people attended St Martin’s Athletic Club’s event at Blanches Pierres Lane.
Club president, Henry Davey, said the decision to hold the event had rested firmly with the professionals who provided the fireworks display.
‘We were worried that it might not go ahead because we had bought a lot of food and we thought we might get stuck with it,’ he said.
Specsavers has a bonfire party scheduled at the ground tomorrow night and Mr Davey said they had not wanted to combine the two events because there could have been too many people.
‘This is our “thank you” to the people of the parish for their support,’ he said.
Admission was free but a retiring collection was taken. Mr Davey said the firework display had cost £1,000 and a lot of food and drink had to be sold to cover the club’s costs which it generally just about managed to do.
