SIMON SHARROTT will lead out Guernsey for the first time this season tomorrow at Foote’s Lane.
The GRUFC first team captain (pictured) has recovered from the knee ligament damage he suffered in August and returns to the front row for the visit of Bognor (kick off 12 noon).
‘I’m definitely looking forward to getting the boots on again,’ Sharrott said.
‘I have come through two weeks of full training and [I am] raring to go.’
The return of the captain adds to the recent comeback of player-coach Jordan Reynolds as well as other squad members, which Sharrott feels will be of benefit to the team over the coming weeks.
‘The run into the Christmas break is always a hard one and often determines were you finish in the league next May,’ he said.
Guernsey go into the game on the back of their excellent 17-13 away win at Guildford, who are second in London Two South-West.
‘The previous game against Guilford was a real squad booster and we played some of the best rugby we have played all season,’ Sharrott said.
‘However, this was in patches and we will be looking to play for a more consistent 80 minutes instead of for patches throughout the game.’
Bognor lie second from bottom in the table with four defeats from their six matches.
However, they have won two of their last three and a points difference of -14 suggests that they have been competitive throughout their campaign so far.
‘A lot of their games have been close encounters, so we know that they will be competitive and we cannot expect anything less,’ Sharrott said.
‘First and foremost we have to perform up front and to create the platform, the tight five know what they need to do and now it is all about executing their job as a collective, as at present our backline is looking very fresh and exciting.
‘We have to start the game with a big bang – that being a big tackle in the midfield or a few big carries to get that go forward, which is just as important in defence as in attack.’
n THE RBSI Rugby Academy will play a curtain-raiser game ahead of the GRUFC home game against Bognor tomorrow.
The under-13s will play the U-14s on the main Garenne Stand pitch at 10.30am. All are welcome to come and watch the game.
The Academy fund-raising committee will be preparing the outside catering for the event. Hot and cold drinks and food will be available from 10.30.London Two South-West: Sharrott returns from injury
