INVESTEC Colombians underlined their status as champions-elect with a 5-0 victory over Clubhouse Casuals.

Many people have tipped Colombians to walk away with this year’s Investec Men’s Division One and going by their performance at Foote’s Lane on Saturday they might be right.

‘The great thing about this performance is that we are improving every game,’ said Colombians captain Matt Watson.

‘A great team performance but the defence were superb again. At times, Casuals had us under some pressure and we had to hang in there.

‘The guys at the back do it week in, week out and allow us to play the way we want to and give us a great platform to go forward.’

Watson scored two of his side’s five goals with straight strikes from short corners while Chris Gill, Matt de la Mare and Tim Creasey weighed in with the others.

Watson gave special mention to his defence of Luke Jager, Matt Elston, Will Bisson and Reg Radford and to his goalkeeper, Kees Jager.

From the opposition, he picked out Chris Colclough, Mark Babbe and Damian Wallen.

He thinks Casuals’ first victory is just around the corner.

‘For me, it’s only a matter of time before they gel as a team and start to win a few games,’ he said.

While Casuals struggled, their fellow league new boys, Legis Independents, beat Cenkos Yobbos 3-1.

Their goals came courtesy of island stars Adam Kitching and Andy Alford with two as Yobbos missed the influential Steve Ward in defence.

‘It was another good team performance,’ said Indies captain Pete Carey.

‘We enjoyed good periods of possession and played some quality hockey between the 23m lines, although it would have been nice take a few more chances and kill the game off earlier.’

The result puts Indies in second place on 10 points and three points behind leaders Colombians.

The weekend also saw Unwantables get the better of Deloitte Elizabeth College 4-2.

There was a shock in Division Two, as table-toppers Two Degrees North Mavericks could only manage a 2-2 draw with Generals.

Indies Twos also drew with Senior Vets while Unwantables Twos eased past the Guernsey Women’s side 7-0 and Colombians Twos defeated Elizabeth College Second XI 3-0.Investec Men’s Division One: Colombians win again
