FOCUS HR SOLUTIONS started life with a 75-67 win over the Island Under-21s in Yorkshire Guernsey Division One at Beau Sejour on Saturday.

It was the newly-formed basketball side’s first competitive match.

‘It was a nice start for Focus HR Solutions,’ said their player-coach Kerry Smyth.

‘Dan Marriott played well and Andy Stephens led the team quite well, but really it was a good all-round team performance. It was the first step in a long season’

The U-21s’ coach Adam Farish was far from disappointed with the result.

‘Really, really pleased. It was our first time playing since last season’ he said.

‘With Jason Hooper moving on and a few of our senior side playing for Focus, we were a bit decimated on that front. But I thought we coped with it really well.

‘Max Hamon and Scott Rowe led the way and Sam Simon and Ben Phillips were outstanding in the game. They really stepped up and showed that they can mix it at the top level.’

The juniors’ next match is against Le Mont Saint Abarth on Wednesday.

Abarth have big island players in the form of Nigel Govett, Mark Barnett, Shek Sesay and Jan Renouf.

Rowe will also line up for his club Abarth in the fixture, but Farish said he has everyone else available.

He is expecting a battle for his young side.

‘That will be quite a stern test,’ he said.

Focus’ next match is on Saturday when they take on Le Mont Saint Fiat, who feature the likes of Mike Beasuire, James Tracey and Jeff Stuart.

Fiat will be looking to get their season back on track after losing their opening match with Prime Property Panthers last week.

‘Saturday was a good start, but the big test will be on Saturday,’ said Smyth.

‘We’ll see how well we’re faring then.’

The weekend also witnessed a huge 116-39 victory for Heat over Dee Caf Magics and DTA getting the better of Thunderdogs 81-52 in Men’s Division Two.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s League, Manzur Ladies lost 88-13 to the imposing Wakefield Wakers.Yorkshire Guernsey Division One: Newly-formed side see off Under-21s
