BIG FAL said it was some of the best football he has seen this season.
The well-respected former island coach and current St Martin’s boss, Colin Fallaize, was an enthralled spectator at the final of the island junior schools’ seven-a-side tournament at Hautes Capelles yesterday afternoon.
La Houguette, captained by Fallaize’s 10-year-old son Jacob, took the crown after they defeated Capelles 3-1 in a cracking game of football.
Fallaize was in raptures afterwards and he is not one to mince his words.
‘The standard has been excellent and it’s been the best entertainment I’ve seen this year on a football field,’ he said.
‘There were some of the best goals I’ve seen this season as well. I’d buy a few of those goals if I could.’
Declan Martel put La Houguette ahead in the first half and the score remained 1-0 at half-time.
Capelles equalised through Thomas Dodds in the second half, but La Houguette’s Robbie Legg shattered the parity in tremendous style.
The ball was passed back to Legg at the restart who proceeded to smack it into the back of the net from inside his own half.
La Houguette’s third goal was another corker as Finlay Whitmore drove the ball in from 25 yards from out on the left-hand side.
‘It’s wonderful for these boys to win,’ said the team’s coach Steve Davies.
‘It’s an amazing bunch of lads. I’ve been waiting for this group to come through for a couple of years.
‘They’ve been our one big hope.’
Capelles coach Gary Darling, who also organised the competition, was philosophical about the defeat.
‘It was just one game too much for us,’ he said.
‘We played some lovely football all day and then we ran out of steam in the final. But to be fair they deserved it.
‘The best two teams got to the final and we’ve got four good sides to take on Jersey.’
La Houguette and Capelles now go into the Channel Islands Junior Schools Championships, which are being held at Hautes Capelles on Wednesday 13 January, along with the losing semi-finalists Beechwood and St Martin’s.
The winners of this will represent the Channel Islands in the national ESFA U-11 seven-a-side competition at the end of the season.Island Junior Schools Tournament:
