Juniors make favourites work hard for Mixed League victory

Sam Le MarquandIN THE OSA Mixed volleyball League, Provident Juniors 1 came up against Doyle Motors Bruisers who are arguably the favourites for their division as this season they have added Island Ladies player Sam Le Marquand (pictured) to their squad.

Their experience shone through in the first set with some concise three-touch.

The Juniors continue to build teamwork on Monday nights with some youngsters taking the court for the very first time, but are showing great promise in the shape of Ollie Brehaut and Ellie Le Messurier who are working hard in maintaining their court positions and produced some controlled play, particularly in the second set.

Although Bruisers did end up worthy winners, the GVA Junior Development team maintained their discipline and kept the score very close in the second set.

Coach Skipper said that they are a great bunch and if they stick at the basics the development of their individual and team game will improve.

Both Development teams are learning and receiving first-hand experience this season at officiating as well as playing and gaining respect from the other teams in their respective divisions.

Provident Juniors 2 were hoping to make it five out five this season when they took on Heritage earlier this week.

The Juniors started nervously, but after some neat three-touch plays their nerves steadied against an able Heritage side.

Both teams were scrambling for the ball at times with the juniors doing their best against the tall Heritage men to take a very close first set, 27-25.

The second set saw the juniors settle more into their own game.

Seb Skillen served and hit strongly throughout the match, ably supported by Dan Skipper, who once again produced some pin-point digs, while Skillen’s headers caused their coach a few smiles.

A couple of less than controlled plays by the Juniors gave Heritage the second set.

The third was a real ding-dong battle.

Juniors’ Jack Robilliard was heroically picking up touches over the net to keep rallies going and Nat Gaudion, whose confidence is improving with every game, had some good touches under pressure.

At the change of ends mid-way through the final set Heritage were two points up and a couple of varied serves saw them continue the pressure.

Player of the match, Tom Guille provided some steady back court play into setter Gavin Fitch for both Skillen and Skipper to make some great spikes.

At the other side of the net Heritage were retrieving some seemingly lost balls taking them to match point.

A strategic time out by PJ2’s coach at 15-14 to Heritage resulted in a calm attack from Skillen for the Juniors to level the score.

Gavin Fitch then served out the game with Heritage unable to respond.

R1 Construction took the first set against Cannon on Monday night 25-16, facilitated by some excellent setting by Nick Gaudion which enabled powerful and accurate hitting from Ross Martel-Welsh and brother Ryan Martel.

Cannon put the pressure on R1 Construction during the second set with some excellent court cover particularly in the back court from Andi Le Poidevin and Garth Norman and good setting from Tracy Lewis (awarded player of the match).

R1 Construction’s Nikki Scott and Silvie Evans (also awarded player of the match) had some excellent spikes and the set was drawn out to an exciting 28-26 to Cannon.

In the third set consistent serving from Cannon gave them an early lead but, despite Cannon’s big block from Dave Bartram, R1 Construction’s Paul Cave helped even up the scores and the set ended 15-10 for R1 Construction, taking the final victory.

Other results included a narrow victory by HTC over Mercator.volleyball – osa recruitment leagues
