GUERNSEY Cheerleaders arrived home happy after winning two awards at the Southern Region Championships.
The squad flew back yesterday after the event in Brighton over the weekend.
The cheer section placed tenth and the dance section came second in its category.
Head coach Makela Harrison said the results were amazing considering the competition from the squads around the UK.
‘We are delighted. All the girls did really well.
‘They have worked so hard before the competition and that has paid off,’ she said.
The group of 23, aged between 12 and 24, try to make it to one UK competition a year.
But a trip there costs around £250 per girl.
‘We have to do our own fund-raising and a lot of it is funded by the children and their parents, so it’s thanks to them for making this possible,’ said Mrs Harrison.
She said the competition had been very useful for ideas and contacts. These included the director of the British Cheerleading Association, who invited the group to take part in a competition in Europe against Jersey and France.
In all, about 50 teams participated in Brighton.
‘The girls worked well together and pulled off some fabulous routines. I could not have wished for any more. I’m so proud,’ said Mrs Harrison.
‘We were all crying because we had done so well. To come that high up was unbelievable.’
* The squad will perform outside Town Church during late shopping on 10, 17, 21 and December at 7.30pm.
