Watson is flattered

Heather WatsonHEATHER WATSON has revealed her delight in being one of the final three being considered for the title of 2009 Young Sports Personality of the Year.

‘It makes me feel special that I’m being considered for this award, especially because of some of the people who’ve won it before, like Andy Murray and Wayne Rooney,’ she said.

‘It’s very inspiring and both of those two have gone on to have amazing careers.

‘Being nominated for things like this doesn’t make me feel like I’ve made it because I’ll only feel like that when I’ve won all four grand slams,’ she joked.

‘This will just motivate me to work harder and do better.’

Guernsey’s US Junior Open tennis champion was named on the final shortlist on Tuesday, alongside world diving champion Tom Daley and double world youth sprint gold medallist Jodie Williams.

‘I’ve seen a lot of Tom Daley on TV and I know Jodie Williams won the 100 and 200 metres at the World Youth Championships. They’re both incredibly talented. It’s great to be representing tennis,’ Watson said.

‘Someone told me that I’m the first person from Guernsey to even be nominated for this and that makes me very proud. I’d love to take this one home for Guernsey.’

The winner will be announced live on the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year programme on Sunday 13 December.Young Personality of the Year
