LEE MERRIEN will not be off to the European cross-country championships this year.
Needing, realistically, a top-five finish in Saturday’s European trials at Sefton Park in Liverpool, he finished ninth over 9.8km on a course where last year he placed a marvellous third.
But there was joy in the Sarnian contingent at the showing of Katie Rowe, 11, who was runner-up in the under-13 girls’ race over three kilometres.
