A shave with charity

BANK manager Nick Lock raised £393 for Children In Need after shaving his moustache for the first time in 30 years.

Nick, 52, who has worked at the St Anne branch of NatWest since 1992, was encouraged to shear his facial hair by colleagues.

He said: ‘The staff thought it would be a good idea. They all sponsored me, as did several people in Guernsey and staff from Lloyds TSB. I was really pleased to raise £393 – I only expected to get £100.’

Nick said there had been mixed reactions to his new look.

‘To be fair, most people haven’t even realised. I had a beard for years and no one noticed when I shaved that off either.’

Nick said it took a couple of days to get used to life without facial hair.

‘I’d like to thank everybody who donated to the cause.’

Alderney Age Concern has taken over the old Stock Exchange.

The Victoria Street premises will now sell unwanted items for charity.

Alderney Age Concern’s Barbara Benfield began stocking the shop last week and served several customers well before the official opening, which took place on Thursday.

‘We came to do the pricing up but ended up serving about half a dozen people,’ she said. ‘It’s a great start. We’ve already made £50 before officially opening.’

Barbara is now looking for stock and volunteers.

‘We’d like to hear from anyone who has something to donate. People can just give me a ring or bring it here on a morning.

‘We’re going to try to open every morning and make sure we’re open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The shop will be run by volunteers, so if anyone can spare an hour or two, please get in touch.’

Everything in the shop has been cleaned and will remain on sale for at least a month.

‘If things don’t move after a month or six weeks, they will be given to the next jumble sale. We’re not going to throw anything away.’

l Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Barbara on 07781 123637.

Three kittens are on the lookout for a new home. Local vet Helen Dickinson took in the cute creatures from Poole-based Pound Puppy Animal Rescue. ‘The cats were originally from Donegal in Ireland and were taken to Poole along with 14 others, as well as six puppies,’ she said.

‘Six kittens came over here and I neutered them all and gave them their vaccinations. Three have found new homes but I still have some left.’

Of the remaining kittens, two are female. They are all about 11 weeks’ old and cost £150 each. The money will cover the cost of neutering and the vaccinations.

l Anyone who would like a kitten should contact Helen on 822260 or pop into her Ollivier Street surgery.
