HERM’S recent baby boom seems to have come to an end with the January birth of Oscar Nicholls.

Oscar Kevin was born to parents Mat and Katell nine days overdue on Saturday 9 January at 2.10am, weighing in at a hefty 8lb 12oz.

Although Katell was in the Princess Elizabeth Hospital for several days before the birth, everything went well and mother and baby were home the very next day.

To show what a small world it is, in the next bed was Lucie De Guerin, fiancee of Herm chef Nigel Waylen, who went into labour on the same day.

Katell has worked in the island for five years in many different departments, including as admin assistant last year. Mat skippers the Sea Horse, Herm’s cargo boat.

The couple got together in 2006 and were married in St Tugual’s Chapel in November of 2008.

Both have taken to parenthood like ducks to water and already have Oscar in a routine that suits all of them.

Being so far from family can be difficult with a new baby, but this summer, Oscar will be going on several little holidays to meet his extended family in England, Scotland and France.

In April, keen runner Mat will be taking part in the Paris marathon. Katell, who grew up in Paris, will be taking Oscar to cheer on his dad, and to meet her family from France and Belgium.

Later, they will visit Largs in Ayrshire to visit his great-grandparents. For them, he is their first great-grandchild. On Mat’s side, however, there are 10 young children, but all are girls, so Oscar can now proudly carry on the family name.

They will also go to the New Forest to visit Mat’s parents, who missed Oscar’s birth by days. They stayed in the island over new year, when the baby was due, but as he was late, they had to leave just before he arrived.

This is the first time in three years that no one in the island has been pregnant (that we know of). So many babies in such quick succession is probably a record for the island and for such a small community in general.

For those keeping count, that now makes six boys born in the island since November 2007.

For the record, Lucie did have a girl. Although technically a Guernsey resident, she has close ties to the island, as does baby Emilie Gracelyn, born on 8 January at 6.30am, weighing 8lb 7oz.

Who will be next to announce a Herm pregnancy – and will we ever be able to buy pink bootees instead of blue? Watch this space…
