Colin Tranter with one of the new CI records, a gilthead bream. (0815092)
FIVE new Channel Island records have been approved by the Guernsey and Jersey Record (Rod-Caught) Fish Committees.
Four of them were shore-caught and one boat-caught.
Only one record swapped Bailiwicks and that was Richard Torode’s 59-0-0 shore-caught stingray ousting the 41-0-0 record that had been caught in Jersey way back in 1952.
The other three shore-caught records were Colin Tranter’s 8-15-6 gilthead bream that beat Daryl Butcher’s 8-8-8 previous record, Dave Vaudin’s 1-1-3 shore rockling, which was better than Tim Cotterill’s 1-0-5 mark and Jersey angler C. Renouf, whose 15-15-0 smooth hound replaced A. Gavey’s 15-10-12 fish caught in Jersey in 2005.
Gavey had some consolation for his 5-15-4 boat-caught thin-lipped grey mullet removed the previous 5-5-0 record that was also held by a Jersey angler.
The new amended lists will appear in the 2010 record list booklet, which is now being prepared and should be available in three to four weeks.
MIKE WEYSOM, who has been the Guernsey Mullet Club champion for the last seven consecutive years, has got off to a flying start in this year’s championship race after he landed six mullet for a total weight of 19-8-0.
In all, five members landed a total of 11 mullet. Sam Robins was the second in the catch list, catching two for a 6-3-3 total. The heaviest of the month was caught by Lee Gillot, a 5-13-1 specimen.
The catches were completed by Paul Carre who had a 4-15-4 fish and Glen Cortez who caught one of 2-10-0. In spite of that snowy, cold weather in January catches were up on the same period in 2009, the total catch was just three, with the biggest being the 4-14-0 fish landed by Carre.
THE first angling open of the year is just just nine days away.
It’s a new event, the Piriou Family Winter Open organised by the Bailiwick Bass Club and its main objective is to raise money for charity, with all proceeds going to the Channel Islands Air Search.
It will be held over a weekend, running from 5pm on Friday 26 February and ending at 5pm on Sunday 28 February.
A shore-based bass competition, anglers will be allowed to use two rods and there will be a 4-0-0 qualifying weight.
It’s open to both seniors and juniors and there will be a great prize list.
There are fishing vouchers and cash for the top three to the value of £300, £200 and £100 respectively. There will also be further prizes for lower-placed catches and special awards for the juniors. There are no pairs or team competitions.
Registration for the event will take place at the Venture Inn and at the premises of J. H. Mahy and Sons at the Houmet between 5 and 6pm on the Friday.
Weigh-ins will both be at the Venture Inn at 5pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sunday, which will be followed by the presentation of prizes and a light buffet.
A reminder to all club and perspective members, the annual meeting will be held at the Wayside Cheer tomorrow night at 7.30pm.
