GUERNSEY came close to capturing a major scalp in the national basketball league at the weekend.
The Greens lost by just seven points to Bognor Pirates at the state-of-the-art, £5m. Arena Sports Centre on Saturday.
With Bognor a long-established hotbed of basketball talent on the south coast, they find themselves currently sat in second place in Division Four South West.
The match’s top scorer was Guernsey’s all-action Sierra Leonean, Shek Sesay.
The former Mid-Sussex Magic star weighed in with 21 points while Le Mont Saint Fiat centre Mike Beausire picked up 13 points in the 77-70 defeat.
But their match with top-of-the-table Team Solent on the Sunday proved to be a much sterner test as they went down 55-90.
Beausire and Sesay jointly top scored for the islanders with 14 points each while the flamboyant point guard Paul van Beek hit nine points.
The men’s team are now sixth in the table having won four and lost 10 of their 14 matches.
Their last two next national league matches are on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March when they will meet Taunton Tigers II and Bath & Trowbridge Titans.
The Guernsey women were also in action at the weekend in Division Two (Women) Midlands South West and they fared better than their male counterparts after they defeated Plymouth Marjon II 54-39 at Hamble on Saturday.
The match’s top scorer was Jenny Rees with 13 points followed by fellow Sarnian Amy Wright with 12.
The next day against league leaders Solent Suns was not so joyful for the Greens as they fell down 74-33.
Wright top scored for the islanders with 17 points.
Guernsey now find themselves third from bottom with six points from eight matches having won three and lost five.
Their next outing in the national league is this Saturday against UWIC Archers II at Beau Sejour.
It will be their first national league match on their home soil.
