A GROUP of mums are preparing to spend 10 days driving an old taxi across rough tracks and mountain roads in India to raise money for the sick and disadvantaged.
Lottie Evans, Sophie Fowler and Marika Perkins have signed up for the Karma Enduro, a 2,000km drive across southern India, in November. They will be driving a Hindustan Ambassador, the design of which has changed very little since it was launched as the Morris Oxford in Britain in the 1950s. They will travel in convoy with an ambulance and mechanics on standby.
Mrs Fowler, 39, and Mrs Evans, 40, decided to do another trip to raise money for charity after climbing both Kilimanjaro and Toubkal in Africa in the last two years.
Mrs Fowler said: ‘I saw an advert for the Karma Enduro in the Sunday Times and before we knew it we were on the phone and signed up.’
The women will be raising money for two charities – the UK-based Rainbow Trust, which supports the families of very sick or terminally ill children, and Indian charity Adventure Ashram, which aims to help some of that country’s poorest people.
Mrs Evans was excited about the trip.
‘It’s another opportunity to see another part of the world and take myself out of my comfort zone. On Kili [Kilimanjaro] we had such a tough time but it was also a holiday because it was so different to my usual lifestyle.’
She added that she knew the journey would be tough but felt well prepared.
‘Everyone kept saying how uncomfortable the trip would be, but Marika and I have slept on the side of a mountain in snow and if we could do that, we can do this.’
