CUCKOO wrasse, three-bearded rockling, turbot and a pout won the awards in the May Fish of the Month competition.
Harry Prince had the best fish, his cuckoo wrasse of 1-12-7 scored 84.41% and gave him the Shakespeare monthly award for the top overall specimen and the Boat Exchange tankard for the best boat fish.
The shore-caught winner was Matt Mahy. His 1-13-13 three-bearded rockling was worth 60.84% and won him the J. Meerveld and Sons tankard.
The two runner-up prizes of Randalls Breda lager went to Venu Le Noury’s 21-0-0 boat-caught turbot, 69.42% and Richard Sherriton, who had entered a 2-9-10 pout while out with Richard Keen over the cement wreck in the Little Russel. It scored a credible 73.26%.
The Tackle Direct spot prize went to Michael Broome, who had entered a 20-4-0 turbot that was worth 66.94%.
The Aval du Creux Hotel junior award went to Lewis Bentley, whose 3-10-14 shore-caught grey mullet scored 30.92%.
The unsuccessful entries were: Peter Gillson, 1-9-6 boat-caught garfish, 57.26%; Richard Blackwell, 13-4-10 boat-caught turbot, 43.93%; Colin Druce, 12-15-5 boat-caught turbot, 47.83%; Peter Gillson, 11-9-0 boat-caught turbot, 38.22%; Jack Thoume, 1-0-10 shore-caught mackerel, 36.94%.
The first entry in the June FOM has come from junior angler David Dyson.
He was fishing over a wreck near the Casquets when his pink artificial bait was seized by an 18-4-0 cod. It will be judged against the 39-0-0 Bailiwick boat record.
An entry for a big turbot nearly came from the Banc de la Schole. Mark Lempriere and Martin Walters were legering with a sandeel bait when they both hooked into big fish. However, they were disappointed to find that they had both caught the same 25-0-0 turbot. So, although it was the biggest recorded this year, it could not become a FOM entry.
