A DELEGATION from Guernsey has been promoting the island’s investment funds and capital markets offering to the Hong Kong business community.
The team held an event to promote the fact that earlier this year Guernsey companies received approval to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. They also visited the Hong Kong Companies Registry and Intellectual Property Office and attended the Asia Venture Capital Journal Forum in Hong Kong.
‘We are seeking to diversify the basis of our finance industry by attracting more business from the “emerging” markets, including Hong Kong, and this visit was an extremely important step in raising awareness of what Guernsey can offer, particularly in terms of company listings,’ said Commerce and Employment minister Carla McNulty Bauer, who led the delegation.
‘We have to increase awareness of what Guernsey can offer the Hong Kong business community in terms of both the capacity for our companies to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the fact that Guernsey can be used to access a range of European capital markets.’

I am over the moon that my taxes are being used to send incompetent politicians on jollies half way around the world. CMB has demonstrated that she is severely lacking in terms of both knowledge and tact, Surely there must be somebody more capable than her?

Phil
I agree but I’m really struggling to think of any from the current crop. Let’s hope some more suitable ones come forward next April.

So…
How many ?
Who ?
How much ?
Were there any Asia Venture Capital specialists from Guernsey included ?
Pity CMB didnt show the same enthusism with the (closer to home) fulfilment industry debarkle..

My God, it didn’t take them long to start
squandering public money again did it ?
Just how many freeloaders were in this ‘delegation’ what did it cost us, and what do we stand to get out of it ?
Answers please, to the people who pay your salaries

Do our deluded politicians believe we want to see them swanning round the World at public expense? Perhaps they just don’t give a toss what we think. In case anybody is listening I want them to provide essential public services cost effectively. That’s all. I’m not interested in egotrip offices in Brussels, dishing out foreign aid, attending jamborees or brown-nosing murderous regimes such as China. Especially when they can’t even sort out our own little island. Stay put and get on with some work!

I disagree with all of you above.
I think it’s great that we are raising awareness of what services we can offer as well as being able to list on the Hong Kong Exchange. It does not sound like swanning around.
Business from the EU is less likely to grow so by targeted emerging countries we can encourage future business, which is good for all of us.
Maybe we could focus on the BRIC Countries also (Brazil, Russia, India & China).

Some people make geeky lists. Above is my all time favourite phrase. Sadly, I never get the chance to use it. Until now.
I agree that approaching new markets for business is a good idea.
If the decision is taken to target, say, China, I hope that appropriate plans are made for schools and the CFE to teach Mandarin.
Otherwise, it’s not very impressive to offer our services to a foreign market if we can’t supply a suitably trained workforce – or maybe we should just issue housing licences as required.

Hey nice gift for Carla, “Made in China” no doubt. What did we give in return I wonder – certainly not a Guernsey tomato I am sure ?!
A long time ago I remember reading articles in the Guernsey Press about how used to proudly show the Dutch delegates around our wonderfull horticulture industry and how we boasted to them just how good we were at growing tom’s and flowers, no doubt giving them a pocketful of secrets for spending their time with us. Years later we didn’t have an industry because they had overtaken us with massive investment in their industry and we couldn’t compete with them – how stupid were we!
Like many others I’d love to know how many people we sent on this jolly trip, what it cost us and did they travel business class and stay in some nice hotels by chance !?
As David suugested it may have been more useful if C&E did better to stop the upcoming potential loss of more than 600 jobs in the Guernsey fulfilment and mail order industry. BTW I didn’t see CMB show up to any of those meetings – Hey maybe if there was a black limo and some free grub and a “Made in China” plastic statue on hand she might have made a smiling appearance ?
Bye bye more of our money !
