THE president of the Chamber of Commerce has called for restraint  from the States when introducing new laws affecting business.

Julian Winser  used his speech at the Chamber annual dinner to urge the Assembly to carefully consider the implications of all new legislation going on the statute book.

He dubbed 2011 ‘the year of consultation’ – ‘a euphemism for doing very little’ – with feedback requested by the States on issues as diverse as education and employment, land use and transport.

‘It is positive that we are able to comment on these many diverse issues, but what causes us some concern is that many of these consultations are a prelude to some form of legislation.

‘We are concerned that all new legislation, despite good and sometimes necessary intent, ends up bringing with it at best a little and at worst a lot more cost – a further barrier to put in the way of business, particularly the small businesses and start-ups which Guernsey is renowned for.’
