THE Channel Islands Co-operative Society is set to spend more than £11m. with local suppliers this year.

The supermarket chain has increased its spend with Channel Island producers of fruit, salad, vegetables, bread, dairy, eggs, herbs and non-food by 4% this year. It is now working with 74 businesses, an increase of seven during the year.

‘We are working with greater numbers of, and spending more with, local suppliers in both islands. And we are always on the lookout for new local products,’ said chief executive Colin Macleod.

‘Supporting local producers and keeping money circulating around our islands is important to everyone in our community.’

I am surprised the co-op does not set up its own multi million pound production site on Guernsey Plus maybe a few more Dozen out of town supermarket/shopping centres. I am sure the E.D would have no objections. The only reason they are probably investing in local produce now is due to the economic situation off island the prices are rocketing upwards along with the possible finish of tax relief. It makes perfect sense well at least for now also it makes for good P.R.

Spartacus – agree. I have a policy to shop with the co-op and forest stores and that’s mainly because of their buy local ethic. I want to support Guernsey growers and farmers and find it easiest to go it at these two stores. That’s alot of money and a very large number of businesses that the co-op are working with. Good luck to them and I’ll keep shopping there! Also nice to have a good news story for a change :-)

I agree Spartacus & MHH- the Co-op are well worth supporting for their policies of helping local businesses and charities. They are fantastic in that respect. (Forest Stores also.) I am still concerned about their plans for Leale’s Yard tho’ which I am worried will suck even more trade out of St PP.
