More to shops’ problems than rent, says new Chamber man
Thursday 2nd February 2012, 2:30PM GMT.
FRESH attempts are being launched this week to breathe new life into Guernsey’s shopping streets in Town and on the Bridge.
The Chamber of Commerce’s retail sub-group has a new chairman and meets for the first time under commercial property expert Tony Rowbotham.
After 30 years in property, the first 20 years specialising in retail, Mr Rowbotham, pictured, believes that he can offer some good ideas to the struggling sector as a retail chain hits financial problems almost every week.
‘The dynamics for retail here are quite different, but the situation for retailers is incredibly difficult,’ he said.

Campaigns
Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.
Sort out the Environment Department first with its stupid ideas and its petty rules and regs. This would be a good starting point. Maybe a rental cap on shops or stop people owning property who do not live on the island any more as often the rents are far to high and they get left empty and slowly fall into disrepair. Maybe stop more and more supermarkets opening up which start selling food but often will diversify in the future.
Finally stop coming up with stupid ideas like new signs or lights this is not going to draw the crowds the tourists or fill the empty shops.

Lets have Sunday trading 10 till 4 .. With an island almost fully employed the majority of shoppers are stuck in offices, factories, warehouses, etc etc when the shops are open and sat at home on sundays surfing amazon … Open up the town on sundays and surely they will come …. No parking clock restrictions either (YET)
