Businesses urged to get ‘pesci’ with contractors

BUSINESSES need to get ‘pesci’ with contractors working at their premises to make sure they stay safe on the job.
Steve Roussel of Ronez, who has more than 25 years’ experience working in the quarrying and mining industries, came up with the mnemonic pesci to help businesses remember five golden rules that companies who want to bring contractors into their working environment should adhere to in order to minimise risks to health and safety.
Speaking to an audience of industry professionals as part of Guernsey workplaces health and safety week, Mr Roussel, pictured, said he came up with the plan after realising there were systems failures within his own company. ‘This presentation came as a result of a near miss on-site,’ he said.
‘I was disappointed that, as a business, we let ourselves down in terms of the standards that we achieved, and it was not the contractors’ fault. It was a systems fault that we had not dealt with, so I came up with a training package.’
Pesci is a five-stage process, which stands for planning, evaluate, supervise, competence and information.
