Chief minister ‘cautious’ on Jersey ties

GUERNSEY politicians have given a somewhat lukewarm response in a national newspaper to the idea of closer formal ties with Jersey.
The Financial Times ran a Jersey supplement on Friday – similar to one Guernsey paid for earlier this year – with an article on increased cooperation between the islands.
The article quoted Jersey chief minister Ian Gorst saying he was a ‘strong proponent’ of deeper cooperation, including ‘confederated structures’, though he admitted that might be some way down the line.
Senator Gorst has already publicly proposed a representative body from the islands to meet regularly.
He said the islands were regarded as a single entity by many in the UK, ‘and when you get further into Europe we’re viewed as the same’.
