And whilst on the subject of the airport, finance was starting to contract before the choice was made to spend ridiculous amounts of money on it. Was it a case of, 'if we build it, they will come'...or in our case, 'won't go'...? Finance shrinking, tourism dire, no viable alternative industries properly explored, the locals increasingly skint (not helped by increasing taxes to fill the black hole created by, among other things, stupid decisions like choosing the most expensive option for the airport project), so can't afford to holiday abroad as much as they once did, and a nice shiny, expensive state of the art airport and runway with no bugger to use it, great stuff.
