Expats Map

This is Guernsey is accessed by thousands of people every day, many of whom are islanders who have ‘upped sticks’ and gone to live elsewhere in the world.

But where are they all, exactly?

Click here to view a larger map.

We’re hoping that this map will enable to us to see just how far afield our expats have spread.

Use the ‘comments’ form at the foot of this page to leave us your name and postcode, or the name of the town/city where you’re living, and we’ll mark it on our map.

You will find stories about Guernsey folk around the world in our Expats’ section.

    Does Sark count????

Great idea. I lived in Sark from 1945, when my mother and I were repatriated from Germany, where I was born, until 1953. I lived in Guernsey for 6 months before joining her in England where I have lived ever since. I rediscovered my Sark roots in 1993 and now go back to Sark every year. A few years ago I saw an entry in the visitors book at the Sark Methodist Chapel from one of the girls in the family I lived with in Guernsey. She had emigrated with her husband, also a Guernseyman in the 1950’s and was on a visit to the UK and Guernsey. I managed to meet up in England and now keep in regular contact. I listen on-line to BBC Radio Guernsey whenever possible.

We are thinking about ways of expanding this little ‘community’ and one idea was to see if we could get photos of the individuals and/or their families in a location that represents their particular region.
If you already have photos online, perhaps at flickr.com, then please tell us how to find them and we’ll put one or two into a special ‘expats gallery’.

Well you can take the rock away from the Guern…but never the Guern from the rock! I often look at the GP, it keeps me in touch with the place. I Will definately be visiting more frequently. A big hello to all those who knew me when I lived here, and all others that I have never met.

I have seen a note from John Le Page. I remember you John. They were tough times at the Castel weren’t they, and very unreal. I remember you,as well as Graham,Norman,Betty, Patsy to name a few. I remember the whistle warnings for meal times and the bell to queue up, as well as the punishments. Such memories never fade, especially the dreadful fostering ones. I have started returning to the Island after so long an absence, it’s such a beautiful place, and I am so proud in the knowledge that Guernsey was my birth place. I have buried some demons, hope you managed this too. Hope your keeping well. Take care.
