The Flybe Community Bursary Scheme is launched in association with the Guernsey Press and Star as exclusive media partner.
Flybe has put forward three categories of award:
- Flybe Sport in the Community
- Flybe Charity in the Community
- Flybe Education in the Community
Each of these categories will be awarded a cash donation of £5,000 and also a travel bursary of £5,000 - for use on the Flybe service network only.
The travel bursary must be used within 12 months of the award/presentation.
It is intended that a panel of judges is invited to judge entries for the bursaries in the individual categories and applicants are asked to specify which bursary that they feel is appropriate.
The judging panel has been invited by Flybe and will consist of:
- A Flybe representative
- A Guernsey Press representative
- Matt Le Tissier who is Flybe’s sporting ambassador
- A Charity representative
- An Education representative
The category criteria
It is important to understand the category criteria:
1. Sport in the Community
Open to any individual, Club or association that believes that an additional grant of £10,000 will further its aims and success. Therefore this could be a promising individual that needs both funding and travel off Island. A Club that has entered a competition that requires travel off Island. An association that requires new equipment or additional training by trainers or teachers travelling to the Island.
In fact any activity that can be or is classed as a recognised sport can qualify under this category.
Any person who receives a professional payment from a third party for this activity does not qualify.
In terms of individuals this is limited to those aged 12 or above.
2. Charity in the Community
Open to any Island registered Charity. Again this should ideally be to facilitate a project that would not otherwise take place. The travel bursary may be used to bring people to the Island either to provide particular expertise, to give talks or as support of a fundraising event.
The travel bursary cannot be used in any part as prize (s) in any fundraising activity.
This charity will then become the Flybe Charity for the year.
3. Education in the Community
This can be open to any school, college or even a government organisation providing an educational service on a non professional basis - i.e. this is not meant to be additional funding for a professional company but in certain circumstances may support a particular project that a professional company in this field is undertaking.
This could mean for example that a charitable organisation may also qualify if they are providing an educational message or fulfilling a specific educational need on the Island.
Education can encompass a variety of projects from environmental projects, conservation projects to a youth project involving education as a means of reducing street crime.
It is important that each entry nominates the category in which the entry should be placed. If this is not done they judging panel will place it in the category that they believe is most appropriate.
Nominations are invited in the three categories. An application into a category should be supported by up to maximum of 250 words as to why you or your organisation should be selected. In all categories the judges decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
Timetable of activity:
a-Launch date May 31 2008.
b-Nominations invited with a closing date of 22 June 2008.
c-Nominations process closes and panel selects shortlist of three in each category.
d-Final shortlist drawn up and a profile put in paper together with outline plan for use of bursary.
e-The readers of the Guernsey Press are asked to vote for one in each category by voucher printed in the newspaper.
f-The category winners must agree to participate in future PR activity and will be required to agree to this by means of a signed contract which will be forwarded to the winner of each category.
