Education

The educational system in Guernsey has similarities with that of the UK, although there are one or two major differences.

Unlike the UK, Guernsey still operates the 11-Plus system, with pupils who achieve a particular grade earning scholarships to the island’s Grammar School or one of the colleges. The two colleges, Elizabeth College for boys and the Ladies’ College, are not part of the government-run education system, although they do receive a grant.

Parents who particularly wish their children to attend either Elizabeth or Ladies’ College - or Blanchelande Girls’ College, a Roman Catholic secondary school - can opt to pay the school fees.

There are no universities in Guernsey and many of those who wish to take a degree course must leave the island to continue their studies.

However, students can take vocational degree courses at the College of Further Education.

The College of FE also offers courses leading to professional qualifications, as do local banks, accountants and the nurse education centre.

Finally, there is opportunity for distance learning with the Open University and some UK higher education providers.
