Voice For Victims
Voice for Victims is a campaign aimed at promoting the rights of those affected by child sexual abuse.

Is this the storm before the calm before the storming of the voting stations? Don’t know why, but I feel the turnout won’t be as bad as some fear – even in my district, the Vale, where the choice is very limited.
PS Why don’t you ‘advertise’ this blog on the TIG forum pages with one of your TIG gravatar postings?

I was the first person to vote at Beau Sejour (St. Peter Port North). Looking forward to co-hosting Island FM’s Election Night Live from 8pm until the last results come in…

Richard.. if you keep blab, blab, blabing on about I did this and I did that you might get one more vote than Tony Webber next time around…

Just got back from the Vale Douzaine where my check in desk had temporarily run out of voting slips … car park choc-a-bloc

I don’t do twitter I’m afraid but I’ve just (at about 1.40pm) seen the most unusual election day sight and you can put on your blog if you like. That of John Gollop wandering around on the Bridge. What’s he doing down our end of the island? He should be wandering around the northern parts of St Peter Port, surely? Also, this morning, candidate for the West Yvonne Burford in the High Street looking with her boy and hubby, looking pretty relaxed. Any more candidates spotted well AWAY from their polling stations???
Either he’s lost or very confident!

I would have said hello, had I known, Martino.
Urgent school sports clothes buying mission!
Martino
I think there is a serious price war going on between the two sandwich shops on the Bridge
Report abuse
If it was the Vale side of the Bridge, perhaps John’s up there to console his mate this evening. No buses after the polls shut.
I can probably save him the suspense now though.

Im on my way to vote, iv decided on a mix of old and new, shame I couldnt pick a woman to add to the mix either. Im lucky tho cuz in some districts the options are very limited.
I went to the St Peters polling station at 1315 to vote, and the polling officer was very rude to me just because i have a foreign sounding name, i was born and raised in Guernsey and i went today to vote, not to be insulted by an official!
You’re not THE Eric Bin Laden from Bellee Lane are you?
Just been to the Douzaine Room to Vote with my two sons who were both voting for the first time. Kevin Stewart and Ivan Rihoy there also. Kevin Stewart thanked us for turning out, but only after we voted!
I believe the candicates are only allowed to speak to you before you vote if you start the conversation. They are not allowed to speak first. However, they can speak after you have voted.
Correct!!
How KS manages it is anybodys guess…
Report abuse
That’s possibly because candidates are not allowed to engage you in conversation before you vote – only after.
Thanks for the clarification on KS. Just a thought, did you all get the manifestos through the door or even callers. I had six in the post amd two visits from prospective deputies.
Well, I just voted at the Rue Mainguy station and now blogging off as we look forward to a great evening’s entertainment. Chelsea v Barca in the champs league followed by the Guernsey general election. I wonder if there will be any major upsets?
With all the recent talk about IWV I decided to spend a little time working out who I would vote for in each district. Much to my surprise it was not that difficult!
None of the candidates seem to know anything about the drilling at night..

RE Twitter’s role in the election campaign: it may have won some candidates a seat, but I wonder if it may have lost a seat for those who spent more time tweeting than on the doorstep…?
I think I have a solution to both IWV and engaging more voters in the next election: an X-Factor style televised election. There could be one live programme a week on Saturday nights over, say, a six-seven week period, with each show covering a different district. Each show would cover the candidates views on current topics and require them to answer questions on-the-spot (hustings style). Questions would be texted or tweeted in by voters before and during the show. Candidates would be chosen at the end of each show and the voting would be open to all islanders, regardless of district. There you have IWV without the overwhelming task of selecting 45 deputies in one sitting, and the opportunity to engage with politics from the comfort of your sofa all in one go – problem solved!

just seen channel tv
1) what on earth was carol steere wearing?
2) a very bitter lady – thank heavens she has gone
3) very exciting election – we are using spreadsheets woohoo!
Jack
Report abuse
Just seen the headline “Steer injured by pellet gun” rabble rousers like you formenting dissent! Roll out the armourded Landrover!
Hope you’ll be publishing that spreadsheet, Jack!
We’ll be losing a couple of good deputies in Castel who have higher votes than some of the other areas. Be interesting to see what would happen if IWV was applied AFTER voting.
this is funny too
barry brehaut complaining about negative campaigning in st peter port south – pot calling kettle black? and then without even pausing for breath criticises candidates for short manifestos!
its the way he tells them
Report abuse
What a ridiculous and unfair comment. Try to cut this hard working and very capable deputy a little slack. There is a world of difference between the mini campaign of bad-mouthing this deputy had to endure PRIOR to the election and his quite valid observation AFTER the results were announced that some so-called manifestos were written on the back of a fag packet. The way you tell them, jack, isn’t funny at all.

Bit touchy Martino – raw nerve
what flack precisely did Baz have to take?
what was the negative campaigning?
Personally I am a bit sick and tired of Baz and Mat refusing to step up to the plate and take on a proper role in government and make decisions.
It is so easy to criticise as Scrutiny and top the polls – Mat and Baz havent had to take a tough decision in their political careers – politically astute as a way of staying popular, but morally – acts of cowardice.
which is a shame they both are talented and should be contributing more – instead they will take these high profile less onerous roles and get support for criticising other politicians whilst they also take on part time employment to supplement their states deputies pay!
As I understand it the negative campaigning was the whipping up of fears over the future of the open market and the usual tax and spend lefty allegations but let’s move on now.
So far the contributions of these two politicians has been excellent (I’m baffled by your accusation of moral cowardice) although I actually agree with you that they are now ready for departmental leadership roles.
I must admit I was disappointed to hear Matt say he’s not ready yet. With his huge mandate he must be ready and I think Environment would be the ideal department for him to cut his teeth on, leading the traffic and transport strategy and the further reform of the planning laws.
Finally, I am not aware that either of these two ‘take on part time employment to supplement their states deputies pay’. It just shows how much – or how little – you know about them really.
Hasn’t Matt virtually tied himself down to a year or two’s hard graft producing a Harwood 2 type report to organize a States that will actually work in the twenty first century?
I agree Ray, and Matt has done immense stuff in his first four year term as a new, young politician in his 20s – an achievement the Vale voters recognise but one that will never satisfy the likes of jack, who seems to have taken on the role of one of Lyndon’s self-appointed pet rottweilers, snapping away indiscriminately at anyone who appears as a threat to his lord and master. You’ve earned yourself a nice bone or two over the last couple of days jack. There’s a good boy!
Oh dear Oh dear
Matt Fallaize is on the phone in
He is about to lead the work on a report to reform the States and has just made it quite clear that he is AGAINST IWV !!!!!!
Have you not read the runes Matt? The voting fodder is clamouring for IWV .. nothing else will do in 2016.Ignore the runes at your peril
Oh dear Oh dear

Martino – ha ha! not sure how LT is going to reward me as I dont know him and he doesnt know me and not sure how I can benefit from anything I post here – why make assumptions and why be so personal?
Now all the results are in I see that only 25 of the 45 had an absolute majority within their districts of the votes cast. 12 of these in the Castel and Vale, Castel 3 on 50 or 51 percent, still a real majority. Vale with its limited candidature was most definate presumably for that reason.
Possibly we ought to have a second round of all non 50% candidates, maybe put to the island as a whole to ensure the island is behind the rest at the same time meeting the call for island wide elections and protecting the local parish represntation at the same time.
This would also “weed” out the numbers which is one of the principal objections to IWV.
As a refinement we could eleminate the poorest candidates from the second round thinning the field further and possibly go to a third round so that there are No minority candidates elected at all.
Out with the old in with the young.

Jolly well done Rodger, nice to see a real brain working for the island instead of the no brainers looking for a job…

Twelve out and Twenty two in,sorry but how does this balance out? Am I missing a trick here? ‘Big time’,or should I say ‘Two time’

I am a Guernsey girl living overseas and will be returing in the next couple of years. I have been hesitant to return knowing that in recent times the island has been run by and load of completely useless self-serving loons. However, this Election has given me hope with the election topper, Roger Perrot. Finally returned to the fold after many years, but somebody the island needs. Take a look at his manifesto – precisely what the island needs. Stop this ridiculously bloated States for starters, but hoorah for Roger Perrot – at last a real politician with real vision.
Thanks Guadeloupe, now everything is clear, common sense really.

Ivorggoodsoup I think you’ll find the last incumbent was good, you have the first leaves of spring sprouting for executive government. So your island will be run by the business lobby and not for the people at grass roots.
