St Peter Port South

whitford.jpgRichard Whitford

I have lived in St. Peter Port since 1984, having been employed by a bank, and the former Advisory and Finance Committee, before setting up my own legal consultancy.

The States needs to take a firm hold of its financial direction. If elected, I intend to use my finance experience in debates concerning the expenditure of monies and future income sources.

In terms of experience, I am qualified in banking and law, being a Bachelor of Laws and a Barrister (non-practicing). I am Treasurer of The Guernsey International Legal Association, of which I am a Founder Member and Past President, and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. My previous experience involved financing and budgeting for domestic and international infrastructure projects, developing close contacts with the City of London.

Decisions will have to be made as to how Guernsey will fund health, education, airport & harbour, and pensions. We cannot spend what we don’t have. Our income stream is now drying up, largely as a result of the new tax regime. Taxing residents will not be sufficient.

My focus, if elected, will be to press this issue, and provide input and guidance. I would intend to be very involved with the new Government Business Plan, which is a structure upon which to build. I have reviewed my business interests to ensure that I can commit the time necessary to make a positive contribution, whilst continuing with voluntary work.

My manifesto is brief and concise, that is my style. I do not make rash promises or idle claims. I will debate issues using rational argument and common sense.

I intend to bring an experienced, business-minded approach to the States and hope that it is a style you feel able to support; after all I intend to represent our shared views.
