The reason I have decided to stand for election this time is because I believe I have a lot to offer in the role of deputy.
If I am successful in the election there are some areas that I would give particular attention to, not least the issue of island-wide voting.
At the moment we, the voters, can only select from a handful of people in one district. If the election was opened up to allow us to vote in other districts, we would have more choice and therefore a better say in who we choose to do the job. I have campaigned for this to be brought to the States for some years.
Of interest to me is the environment and would suggest to the States the implementation of a green bike scheme, to run throughout the island. This would entail distinctive bikes in stations in all the parishes, chain-locked in the same way as supermarket trolleys using a 1 coin, resulting in free transport and a potential health benefit.
Creche facilities could be introduced as an employee incentive, set up in-house and paid for by both employer and employee via insurance contributions.
I believe the current winter-fuel allowance that runs from October to May should be extended to cover year-round costs. This would help the more vulnerable in the community as well as those struggling on a low income, with the provision of free milk, maybe 2 litres per week for those in need.
The first-time buyer loans run through housing are still set at 130,000 and are too low. This could easily be increased to 200,000 and would allow more people to own their own homes.
These are just a few of the ideas I believe would solve the problems facing our island today and would work towards implementing them if I am successful on April 23rd.
