Andy Bichard
If you’re like me and want to change the way things are done, for your views and needs to be considered by the States, for there to be a far greater openness of government and for us to put back the ‘feel good’ factor in Guernsey, then we have to change to a system where we work together, evaluating areas accurately, making good decisions and implementing them quickly.
My priorities would be:
Education
I want to keep our entire existing infant, primary and junior schools open as they are essential to the community.
I want to reverse the States decision to introduce student loans because it was the wrong decision and it’s already putting young people off from going to university.
I want to ensure that the excellent intervention by the Chief Minister in relation to safety and traffic flow around the new schools in Baubigny is followed through and taken far further before the new schools open.
Finance
It is important that we recognise the Finance industry in Guernsey for what it is - a vital part of our economy. One that has considerable potential for further development, but which must continue to make a significant contribution to the community.
Light Industry and Tourism
With the strength and size of the Finance Industry we seem to have paid far less attention to other parts of the Guernsey economy than we should have. Such action has been short sighted and needs to be rectified urgently. I want to encourage light industry and tourism by taking the view ‘How can we help you’ rather than the present, ‘You can’t because’ stance.
Poverty
We do have poverty on Guernsey and we have a moral obligation to take positive action within the first few months after the elections.
