Peter Gillson
Aged 46, I am born and bred in Guernsey and grew up in a horticultural family, picking tomatoes and bunching freesias for pocket money. After leaving Grammar, I worked a year for Barclays (where I met my wife, Tina) then spent 10 years in the Civil Service followed by eight with Barings. In 1998 I co-founded Ipes, where I now work one day a week. I am proud to have been Parish Constable for the last four years. I believe that I have the time, experience, decisiveness and love of Guernsey to be an effective deputy.
It is important that we develop a more mixed economy to provide economic growth and economic stability. We do need to keep the finance industry but must attract other industries to the Island.
The critical challenge will be to ensure this growth does not harm our environment, nor reduce our unique quality of life. More importantly, it must allow all Guernseymen from all backgrounds to share in all future prosperity.
Under-investment has left some of our infrastructure in need of upgrading. Very tough decisions will be needed to prioritise and control the costs of these capital projects. I believe that my wide experience demonstrates a proven ability to make tough decisions.
The new States has to be accountable to the people and build the confidence of the people by focusing on good Government and not back-room politicking. I am advocating the investigation into legislation which will create personal liability for deputies, a liability which should extend after deputies leave office.
If elected I would like to serve on The Public Services Department or Treasury to ensure whatever facility is built at Longue Houge takes account of local needs and is not just the cheapest.
