Sarah & I have lived in Torteval & Forest for the past 25 years and brought up a family in a wonderful, safe & caring community. There is no-where else one would wish to bring up a family. It is this community, which I wish to nurture as a deputy. Earlier, I have been a Scout Leader both in England and Guernsey and more recently, constable of the Forest for three years. I now sit on the Forest Douzaine.
I am proprietor of Sarnia Seeds Ltd., which produces specialty tomatoes and seeds for export. In business I endeavour to follow best practice, avoid re-inventing the wheel and repeating errors of the past. These are the principles I would bring to the States.
The first purpose of a community is to provide services such as education, health services, and protection through police, fire brigade and customs. Where services do not need to be delivered by the community I would seek to transfer them to the private sector, as we have done with electricity, telecoms & postal services. The second purpose of a community is to support the less able members, be it in terms of their health, income or housing, and this requires the redistribution of wealth.
For a community to thrive we must provide the environment that will enable our wealth generators to succeed, through Zero-10, revision of our planning laws and removal of red tape.
Earlier generations of politicians guided this Island expertly with the tomato industry, one that was of much lower value than finance. Today we can do the same if, as a government, we act co-operatively for the good of Guernsey. We must take responsibility for our own decisions and act as the catalyst for progress.
Let’s make it happen. ” Guernsey for the people”.
