A MAJOR reorganisation of museum storage has been getting under way this week after nearly 20 years of waiting.

It has taken months of preparation to decide how to go about it since the States gave approval for the project last October. It will take four years to complete.

Museums director Dr Jason Monaghan said the change would lead to better working conditions for staff and the safer storage of items.

But he warned that it was not a long-term answer.

    @Ray

I do wish this article had slipped through the net – it just strikes me as a ‘so there’.

It really pains me to be reminded that our Island healthcare/treatment for bowel cancer went up the swanny for a few dusty artifacts, that, let’s face it, few of us will see and so many of us will not have an inclination to visit – I am sure that once the project is up and running there will be the usual opening jolly, for some invitees. Do hope Rep O’Hara’s bowels remain in a healthy and serviceable state.

Maybe HSSD should look after their budget better then, if you’re scared about bowel cancer you can pay to have your bowels screened privately.

Ray, why are you so worried about £1m when you are quite happy for Mr Flouquet to spend tens of millions extra unnecessarily on the airport?

I’m not worried about the Airport because I trust Environment to follow normal procedure and declare that we can move the runway West but we can’t have access to land on it because it will be incongruous with its surroundings

Cor Blimey, what is up with our island, our history is our heritage and if we can not look after this properly (they have been asking for this for a long time) then what does this say about us? How this ever ended up competing against a bowel cancer screening scheme i do not know. But my father and others in my family have died from cancer but i also know that they were proud Guerns who cared about our amazing history and would have wanted that preserved for future generations!!!

This story was one of the best examples of spinning carried out by HSSD last year. The argument was never about Bowel Cancer Screening v Dusty Old Artifacts.

The real story has always been why HSSD has never effectively managed its budget. A quick trawl through the accounts would no doubt reveal numerous examples of over spending by HSSD which could have easily provided the £250,000 required for the Bowel Screening Unit.

At least Mike O’Hara managed his department within budget.

What an opportunity for overspend on this project, ten years of rising prices and rising inflation to blame it on.

The museums director should be given the £1,000,000 in an account now to spend as he sees fit over the next ten years, if he runs out of that £1,000,000 then THAT`S IT, NO MORE.

He will then have to invest it very carefully to make it last and do the best he can no matter what financial difficulties the account may face in the next ten years. anything he may save goes back to the Exchequer.

I can`t see that happening and I can see him back with cap in hand begging for more well before the ten years is up.

They`ve already said that this is not a long term answer and doesn`t that mean “I`ll be back for more later” in politician`s talk?

Be prepared to dig deeper into tax paying pockets. You have been warned.

As the majority of Island youngsters have no interest in Guernsey’s heritage, it seems to me to be an awful waste of a million pounds…:0(
