MUSEUMS have to balance between history and good taste when it comes to selling Nazi items, Guernsey Museums director Dr Jason Monaghan has said.
The issue was raised following outrage that fancy dress shop Fancy That has been renting out Nazi uniforms and selling flags with swastikas on.
Manager Jo Francis said the business was not selling anything which was not available at local museums.
But all museums approached by the Guernsey Press said they kept any items they sold relating to the Nazis to a minimum.

No Nigel it is not just a flag it is a reminder of a time when terrible things were done to innocent people in the name of a madman. My father was one of the first soldiers to walk into Belson and he never forgot what he saw there, those that were still alive could not be given food as their bodies would not have accepted it, the place was crawling with lice. The people there were close to death, some died as my father looked on and he could not help them, that was just one camp. These camps were filled with Jews, gypsies, prostitutes and homosexuals, Hitler wanted a pure race so he and others tried to destroy what they considered to be the weak links. Guernsey went through many hardships in the 5 years of occupation but others in Europe were subjected to worse horrors. I do not hold the people of todays Germany responsible for that time but if the world forgets what happened, one day it could be repeated so again Nigel it is not just about a flag.

I know what happened was terrible but it’s history just by flying a flag no matter what it has on it will not start a war.

I don’t hear anyone crying out…lets get rid of the bunkers dotted around the island or the underground german museum/hospital etc ???
Surely they are more of a reminder than the odd flag to those who find it offensive.
Enough said lets put this to bed it’s so trivial.

Nigel and Stone de Croze, you have missed the point entirely.
Nobody, for example, is offended by the re-enactors who fire the artillery piece on Pleinmont from time to time. This is part of the Island’s history and should be learned about rather than forgotten.
The ridiculous Cobo mariner, on the other hand, is using the flag entirely outside of an historical context. Aboard a small fishing vessel, it is entirely out of context and can only mean one thing – that the person who flies it in some way supports the ideals it represents. It is such a potent symbol, especially in these Islands, that he must have anticipated the reaction it would provoke and I find his protestations of innocence wholly unconvincing.

Stone De Croze, getting rid of the bunkers wont change a thing , but getting rid of the BANKERS! is a better idea.

I think it’s about time we stopped all these discussions and articles.
This chap probably knows less about the history of Nazism than an amoeba. He’s seeking attention and we’re all giving him exactly what he wants.
He actually does need attention, but it’s in the form of a bit of tough love. Tough in being told to grow up; love in terms of finding out why he’s got a chip on his shoulder the size of a German bunker.
