CI clean sweep at 900m

Wednesday 7th April 2004, 12:00AM BST.

LED by Jersey champion Alex Langley, the CI shooting team completed a clean sweep of the medal positions in the Dave Smith Cup on day two of the Grand Aggregate competitions in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The competition fired at 900 metres was always going to be the hardest of the day and the fierce afternoon heat challenged the quality field to the limit of their ability.

Langley was unfazed at being surrounded by Commonwealth Games gold and silver medallists David Calvert (GB) and David Dodds (SA) on adjoining targets and scored a 50.04 (ex 50.10), better than both his celebrated rivals.

The Jerseyman’s possible was the only one of the day at this distance and showed once again that the Channel Islands are capable of producing some of the finest international marksmen in the world.

He also finished fourth in the daily aggregate.

The news for the CI team got better when it was confirmed Guern-seyman Peter Jory was second and Jersey’s Graeme Harris third, having scored 49.06 and 49.05 respectively.

Though Langley’s win was the highlight of the day, there were other excellent performances from Jersey’s John Norman and Guernsey’s Adam Jory, who each fired a 50 at 300 metres in the opening range of the Dalrymple Cup.

Both were caught out by the wind at the longer 600-metre range and dropped out of contention for high places.
