Ogier gets tough and axes island defender
Wednesday 7th April 2004, 12:00AM BST.
MICHAEL WILSON has burnt his bridges with island football boss Steve Ogier. The North centre back has been left out of the Victory Cup squad to face ASSA Vallee du Dropt at the Track on Sunday and will not be considered for the Muratti Vase final.
‘His commitment to the island squad and what goes on within the squad is not good enough,’ said Ogier, who was reluctant to elaborate further.
Wilson also missed the 2-0 win over Gloucestershire, the last South-West Counties Championship match of the season, although the official line for his omission on that occasion was that he was injured.
Kevin Gilligan and Mark Coutanche are the two other notable absentees from the 19-strong party for this weekend’s fixture, the last before the Muratti final.
‘I do not think Kevin has been fit for a number of weeks now.
‘Both Ock [Paul Ockleford, Ogier's assistant] and me guessed it on Saturday that he wouldn’t finish
the [North v. St Martin's] game.
‘Coutanche has not played any football for a while; he has got a reccurring problem,’ Ogier said.
One man returning to the squad is Sylvans striker Ryan Tippett who missed the Gloucestershire game for disciplinary reasons.
But although this will be the final senior island match before the date with Jersey on Monday 3 May, Ogier insisted the door was still ajar to others pushing for a Muratti place.
However, he admitted that time is fast running out.
‘This is not the final Muratti squad. We are taking 18 to Jersey and there might be a couple of changes,’ he said.
‘We virtually know the side we want to play. Two or three spaces we are not quite sure on yet, but we know the nucleus of the side.’
Whether that nucleus will be in full force on Sunday remains to be seen as Ogier is aware that just two days later North meet Jersey Scottish in the Wheway Cup final.
‘The French game is the last before the Muratti and it gives us a run out but the problem is that the North lads have got to be careful with the Wheway Cup final on Tuesday.
‘But it gives people a chance to say, モlook, play meヤ.’
In the corresponding fixture last year, ASSA Vallee du Dropt were on the end of a 4-0 defeat.
The result this time around is not of the utmost importance to Ogier.
He is just looking forward to getting his players out on the pitch together once more.
‘We don’t know what they [ASSA Vallee du Dropt] are going to turn up with but it gives us a good test for both the players and the coaching staff because you have to think on your feet and sort problems out when they arise.
‘It is nice to know a side and I have got a video of Jersey and have been to see them play, so we will be prepared for the Muratti. But it is also good to pit your wits against other people within a game,’ Ogier said.
