Woman dead in Town flat fire
Monday 12th April 2004, 12:00AM BST.
A POST-mortem examination was carried out yesterday on a woman who died in a house fire. Her identity has not yet been released and police have appealed for information on the Good Friday blaze.
Firefighters were called to a flat at the bottom of Cliff Street, St Peter Port, at 5.15pm.
Police confirmed that the occupant of the premises was pronounced dead at the scene.
They are not treating the matter as suspicious, but inquiries are continuing.
The woman’s identity will be released when all next of kin have been contacted and informed.
Barman Philip Hargreaves was painting and decorating in the nearby Cock and Bull pub at the time.
He watched a fire engine arrive and officers set up the hose from the hydrant at the top of the road.
He said that there was no sign of smoke.
‘Then an ambulance turned up and they walked a man, I would say about 38, up the road with a mask on,’ he said.
‘Other paramedics also turned up and another fire engine, but I didn’t see anything else.’
The pub was closed at the time.
