Bellamy backs Sark’s first flower fortnight

Tuesday 13th April 2004, 12:00AM BST.

BOTANIST, writer and broadcaster David Bellamy is to be the patron of Sark’s first Wild Flower Fortnight. The two weeks from Saturday 1 May are aimed at showcasing the unique floral displays that are available to the island’s visitors during spring.

‘One of Sark’s best-kept secrets is the stunning display of wild flowers, which are at their floral peak each May,’ said Tourism chairman Colin Guille.

‘By designating the first two weeks of the month Wild Flower Fortnight we hope to raise awareness of this little-known aspect of Sark’s natural beauty. We are delighted that Professor Bellamy will be visiting the island and supporting this event.’

During the fortnight, visitors will be able to participate in guided tours run each day by a team of local experts and volunteers.

The tours have been designed to be as accessible as possible for people of all ages and abilities – from the experienced botanist to the curious bystander.

Visitors will be able to go on a number of self-guided walks, special carriage rides and bicycle tours.

There will also be several evening events centred around the topic of wild flowers and conservation in general, plus an exhibition organised in conjunction with La Societe Serquiaise.

Businesses are supporting the fortnight by giving visitors special offers and discounts during their stay. They will be given vouchers redeemable at hotels, restaurants and shops.

‘Our members are pleased to support the Wild Flower Fortnight,’ said Sark Chamber of Commerce chairman Alex Magell.

‘The selection of offers and discounts available to visitors will add significantly to the already excellent value of a visit to Sark and we give the event our full support.’

Visitors travelling with Isle of Sark Shipping can also benefit from special ticket pricing, while yachtsmen mooring in the island’s waters will receive concessionary rates during the fortnight.
