Imperious Gallienne takes CI title
Friday 30th April 2004, 12:00AM BST.
TREVOR GALLIENNE has won the Channel Islands Championship for the third successive year. The Guernsey champion was up against his Jersey counterpart, Graeme Bisson, in a keenly-anticipated match that did not disappoint.
Gallienne won the toss and put Bisson into break the first of two legs.
The audience thought they were about to witness a classic ‘two-break’ challenge as Bisson’s steady start progressed through the thousands, but disaster struck when, with a break of 5,520 to his name, he put the ball behind the awkward 10 pocket.
He could only come off the side cushion, clipped the white peg and the break was dropped.
To his credit, he overcame that blow to break back a moment or two later. This time there was no mistake and he ran a creditable break of 7,730.
But on his day Gallienne is one of the best players in the country and his response in the second leg emphasised that.
Where others might have struggled in the knowledge that a worthy opponent was waiting for the slightest error, Gallienne methodically and calmly ran in a title winning break of 12,180.
With just a minute or so to play Bisson conceded.
Gallienne had earned his place in the CI event with a historic win over Paul Dyer in the Guernsey final.
Dyer, victor over Larry Bearder in the semi-final, elected to break first and played the table out with a total score of 12,530.
Gallienne, not new to this situation, kept his nerve and also, for the first time in bar billiards history, played the table out, scoring a massive 14,270.
The Guernsey pairs competition went to Tom Oliver and Karl Ogier, who beat defending champions Gallienne and Barry Osbourne 3-0.
Jersey regained the inter-insular team trophy but the 5-1 scoreline does not do justice to the Sarnian performance.
Several Guernsey players failed to capitalise on game winning chances.
Guernsey captain Gallienne was in imperious form, playing the table out from start to finish for a break of 15,000.
