Muratti ref in first season on Premier list

Saturday 1st May 2004, 12:00AM BST.

IT WILL be the duty of Howard Webb to keep the players in line during the men’s Muratti Vase final at Springfield on Monday. The 32-year-old level-one official has been refereeing for 14 years and is currently in his first season on the FA Premier League list.

Webb lists his most memorable moments as his first Premiership game in the middle, between Fulham and Wolves, and the Division Two play-off final between Cardiff City and QPR at a sold-out Millennium Stadium.

His worst moment also doubles as his funniest.

‘Doing my first-ever ladies’ football game when I was in my third season as a Football League referee and being asked at half-time by one of the players, who was most serious, if I had qualified as a referee, so unimpressed was she by my performance,’ said Webb.

His future ambitions are to become an established Premiership referee and then to go on to be a Fifa official.
