Ogier to take safe approach

Saturday 1st May 2004, 12:00AM BST.

JOBY BOURGAIZE has started as many senior representatives games as anyone this season – six, the same as Jon Veron – but the Bels whizz-kid is likely to be on the bench for Monday’s big one. Steve Ogier, who will confirm his starting XI for the Springfield showdown on the day of the game, will dispense with the Belgraves’ right-wing express for a more solid, conservative approach.

That may mean Ryan Tippett playing as a lone striker with North’s elusive Muratti debutants, Jon Veron and Dave Rihoy, supporting from wider roles.

Expect to see Jan Renouf playing in an advanced central position with Steve Brehaut and Matt Warren in the holding roles.

Steve Concanen will make his Muratti debut at right-back with Simon Johns on the left and Stuart Polson and Ian Potter in central defence.

Vale Rec’s Jody Bisson will be keeping goal for the eighth time in a Muratti.

As cruel as it is Bourgaize’s demotion to the bench would be understandable.

Guernsey would have been fragile centrally had they plumped for a basic 4-4-2 with the Belgrave on the right and Rihoy on the left.

It also gives Ogier a viable attacking alternative – real pace – from the bench, which he had hoped Rangers’ Dale Garland might provide until the athletics star was forced to withdraw.

It’s certainly a side strong enough to win and end the nine-year sequence of the home side avoiding defeat on the big day.

The last side to lose at home was Guernsey in 1995, when they were edged out 2-1.

Jersey lead the overall series 46 to 40 and the Jersey Scottish dominated Caesareans (the Upton Park Cup losers have seven starters) will be out to avenge that shock penalty shootout Upton defeat by St Martin’s.

Dave Matthews, the Jersey boss, reckons the Upton result will work to his side’s benefit today.

‘The Scottish boys were talking about the game at training and I know they want to make amends.

‘I’m confident losing to St Martin’s will be to Jersey’s advantage because the Scottish players do not want to be beaten again.’
