100 more step out for the World
Tuesday 4th May 2004, 12:00AM BST.
MORE than 570 islanders turned out for yesterday’s 20km World Aid Walk to raise money for international humanitarian initiatives. Walk committee secretary Isabel Farrell said this was 100 more than last year.
‘It’s been almost the most successful to date in terms of participants. We have so far got £14,000 in pledges but even more will probably come in from the late entries. The walk is gaining momentum and this has proved it.’
Proceeds will go to the on-the-ground aid work of Oxfam, Save the Children, Action Aid and Christian Aid.
Mrs Farrell was grateful for the sponsorship from International Private Equity Services as well as the walk organisers, St John Ambulance, police, walk marshals and the four charities.
‘They’ve all been brilliant. A big thank you. It’s a pity it hasn’t been sunny but we’re glad the rain has held off. As always, the walkers have made the day because they’re so positive.’
First-time World Aid walker Justin White enjoyed the day.
‘It was good apart from the cramp. We did it for the children. If they want to do it again, we’ll join them.’
His granddaughter, Callie de la Mare, aged eight, also enjoyed the day and said she would take part next year. She walked the distance without stopping.
‘It was good. My feet are tired. I just want to go to the fair now.’
Fellow walker Paulette McEneaney, 48, completed the distance in five hours.
‘It was great. I do a lot of training, like swimming, running and cycling. I feel great. It was a piece of cake. It was an enjoyable walk and the weather was fantastic.’
The walk started at 9am and the participants, aged from eight to 80, spanned a range of abilities.
‘There was a really good feeling this year,’ said walk committee chairwoman Judy Nettleton.
‘There have not been so many families but a lot of children are striding out. There was a group of six boys who were walking and sprinting. They were very positive.
‘We would encourage more families to take part next year. Make a day out of it and bring the dog.
‘It’s not a race.’
