Guernsey dominate Shield

GUERNSEY dominated the match for the Leadbeater Shield, comfortably beating Jersey 32 sets to 16. The junior match at the Rohais Hall was contested over two sections, under 12 and under 15. Having played the strongest girls in the under-18 inter-insular, which ruled them out of this match, the Guernsey selectors were far from sure the team would win.
In the younger section, Guernsey walked away with an 18-6 win. The local players dominated the first group of matches, winning three sets to one in both the boys’ and girls’ singles.
In the doubles, the girls won 4-0, the pairing of Abby Bisson and Emily Trebert not dropping a game.
The boys’ doubles was split 2-2, with Guernsey’s top pair, Matt Ceresa and Nick Abbott, proving too strong for both Jersey pairs.
The mixed section was divided into A and B; the former was drawn 2-2, but Guernsey took all four B matches.
Emily Trebert, of Guernsey, was voted the under-12 player of the match: she was the only one to win all her sets.
The under-15 section was much closer, though Guernsey again were victorious, 14-10.
The boys were far stronger than Jersey, while the girls were much more evenly matched.
The boys won all their singles in two games. The girls’ singles were a different story, with only Joanna Stagg victorious in a hard-fought three-setter.
In the boys’ doubles, Guernsey won 3-1, with Adam Thoumine and Danny Kampmann just losing out 15-10, 15-17, 14-17.
Jersey proved too strong in the girls’ doubles, winning all the matches.
Going into the mixed, Jersey led nine sets to eight, but that was not to last for long. The A-section pairings of Thoumine and Stagg and Stuart Hardy and Miranda Knight played extremely well to win 4-0. The other two pairs, Kampamm and Harriet Thoumine and David and Asley Davidson did well to halve the B section 2-2.
The under-15 player-of-the-match accolade was very hotly contested.
Two players had won all of their sets, but Guernsey’s Hardy emerged the winner with fewer points scored against him.
