Dorey to get clear run at top job
Friday 14th May 2004, 12:00AM BST.
DAVE DOREY has been given a clear run at the Guernsey Football Association presidency. The deadline for nominations was on the strike of 12 last night and the former GFA secretary and chief executive was the only nominee to succeed the retiring Alec Le Noury.
Dorey, who has made it known he will make the introduction of a Channel Islands League one of his primary objectives, has received five nominations.
Fellow GFA stalwart and candidate Roy Trustum failed to attract a nomination and has withdrawn from the race for the presidency.
Dorey, who is also chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association, will now be formally elected at the GFA extraordinary general meeting on 3 June.
Meanwhile, Nick Mollet, the manager of three-times Sunday Soccer League champions The Bowl, says he is excited at the possibility of a Guernsey FA Cup being introduced next season involving clubs at all levels in the island.
‘It will create a great chance of upsets and shocks,’ said Mollet.
‘There’s an abundance of talent in the Sunday League and Business League and this will be an eye-opener to those who are used to watching just GFA football.’
Mollet already has experience of an SSL side beating Priaulx League opposition.
‘We proved ourselves in the Carlsberg Cup a few seasons ago when we only narrowly lost to a full Saints side and showed we could more than compete by beating the Rovers’ Priaulx side on the way to the final.’
Belgraves secretary Andy Robert reacted to the news by saying: ‘what’s it going to take the place of?
‘We’d want to see the proposals in details first.’
A major sponsor has already been found for the competition which would embrace all 10 GFA senior clubs and those in the affiliated leagues. The winners would collect a whopping £2,000, with the losing finalists landing half that amount.
All competing clubs – it is hoped to attract up to 32 – would collect prizemoney dependent on their progress.
