Golden-arm Edwards steals the show
Saturday 15th May 2004, 12:00AM BST.
HEADBANGERS are the Spring Triples champions. In the final of the Guernsey Club de Petanque event, the trio of Marcel Edwards, Shane Brehaut and Graham Robert beat Triple Trouble (Jenny and Geoff de la Rue and Sebastian Renaud) in straight games.
Umderdogs Triple Trouble were overwhelmed 13-2 in the first game.
Edwards was in inspired form all evening, showing no nerves and certainly no mercy.
His display of shooting was as good as any seen at the club.
In the second game, the wounded Triple Trouble bounced back determinedly.
Jenny de la Rue played a consistently accurate lead boule, which would take a more average opponent two, three or even four boules to beat.
However, Headbangers could call Edwards forward to shoot it out, or put Brehaut in the circle to produce an outstanding pointing shot inside of the lead boule.
Meanwhile, Geoff de la Rue played some delightful ‘pousse’ shots to push rather than fire an opponent’s boule out, or to promote one of his own team’s boule into a scoring position.
Renaud acted as a milieu, shooting or pointing as the play demanded, achieving a good success rate.
Triple Trouble led 12-8 in the second, needing just one more point to force a third game.
But Headbangers refused to buckle.
Brehaut pointed even more accurately, Robert played his best boule of the whole match and Edwards’ golden arm did the rest.
Headbangers sneaked the game 13-12 to take the trophy.
On an adjacent terrain, the play-off Boulehitters (Jeff Le Poidevin, Bob Bartlett and Jose Villanueva) beat Menage a Trois (Stella Machon, Anne Robert and James Symons).
The first game saw a determined and focused Le Poidevin call a sound tactical game and harness the all-out attack of Villanueva while utilising the remarkable pointing accuracy of rookie Bartlett.
With Le Poidevin himself pointing and shooting above average, they won the first game 13-5.
They then took the next 13-10 to take third place.
