Robilliard smashes oldest record in book

KYLIE ROBILLIARD produced two championship-best performances in claiming two of the 13 gold medals the GIAAC contingent won at the weekend’s Hampshire championships in Portsmouth. In doing so, the 15-year-old eradicated the oldest record in the county record lists, the under-17 girls’ 80m hurdles mark, which had stood for 41 years.

Robilliard, who also destroyed the 300m hurdles mark with a super-quick 44.3, has run quicker over 80, but confessed to being well satisfied with her weekend’s work. She also added a silver in the 100.

‘I think I ran reasonably well and only clipped one hurdle. I’d say conditions were very good for sprinting, but it was very warm and there was a lack of shelter.’

The England age-group international started day two with a convincing victory in the 300 hurdles, a race she had never run flat out before. But from lane five she finished well clear (four seconds) of runner-up and team-mate, Erica Bodman.

‘I knew it was a long way and I paced myself. But I still went out quicker than I thought I’d go.’

Among the other Guernsey gold medallists were Island Games 1,500m men’s champion, Lee Merrien who won comfortably in 3-49.9.

Lee Garland won the senior men’s 3,000 steeplechase, Mark Mercier won the under-17 1,500 ‘chase, Bodman won the high jump and Gemma Tingay achieved a fine throws double in the under-17s.

There was also a championship-best performance from promising javelin thrower, James Brehaut. Day two also produced a gold medal for under-15 Kimberley Gleeson, who leapt 4.77 and there were walking titles for Sarah Mercier (under-13) and Stuart Le Noury (under-20).
